Great adventures have been in the world but None them compares to Gorilla tracking in Africa. It was until 1903 that the third species of mountain gorillas was identified best known as the largest living primates in the world. Mountain Gorillas live in three countries Rwanda inclusive and the recent census confirm that 780 mountain Gorillas still exist. Number of visitors go up to Volcanoes National park every year and the crowds can sometimes feel endless especially from June-September during the high season where even some visitor miss the gorilla tracking due to late booking of the Gorilla permit.
Mountain Gorillas are habituated between 2-3 years for research and tourism in both Uganda & Rwanda. The exercise involves visiting a selected family of wild gorillas every day until it gets used to these researchers. With time, all gorilla individuals are identified in terms of their sex, age and later given names. From 1993 to present Rwanda has 10 habituated gorilla families ready for trackers and Uganda has 10 gorilla families too with one reserved for research. If you are planning to do a gorilla tracking safari in Rwanda, follow some rules and regulations in order you’re tracking to be a success. Book your gorilla permit at least a month before your tour since only a maximum of 8 visitors are allowed to track each habituated Gorilla family. As you enter the jungle for tracking keep your voices low so that you can observe the great bird life and other wildlife in the forest Do not leave rubbish in the park. Whatever you bring into the forest should be carried back out with you, when you approach the mountain gorillas, the guides will inform you to get ready, Stand 7 meter (21 feet) distance as you view the great apes, Do not smoke, drink or eat when you are near the gorillas, listen and follow the park ranger instructions since Gorillas change some times, Flash photography is not permitted! When taking pictures move slowly and carefully, Do not touch the gorillas, After the visit keep your voices down until you are 200 meters away from the gorillas.
